The freezing conditions have continued and whilst the course at Mendip is perfectly playable, it has forced the use of the temporary greens which makes the short game even more demanding!
The Ladies completed a nine hole bowmaker event with the low handicap team of Elaine Kitchenham, Chris Olds and Lady Captain, Patricia Rawlins, coping best with the conditions and carding an excellent 40 points. In second spot with 34, were June Page, Hilary Rowdon and Elaine Richardson and in third place, Jean Padfield, Ann Hopkins and Lulu Carolan, with 33 points.
The Seniors’ first stableford competition of the year attracted an entry of 64 and despite the frozen conditions scoring was good. Winning Division Two with 38 points was Seniors’ Captain Elect, Andy Frampton, with 38 points, one point ahead of Peter Letts and Darryl Livingstone. Division One saw Nigel Cheshire, third with 36, John Padfield second, with 37, but winning with the outstanding round of the day was Tony Taylor, with 42.
The Mixed competitive season got underway when 36 players contested the January ‘Mix Up’ event, well organised by Carol Curtis. Playing in Teams of four, scoring was competitive with several of the higher handicap ladies, taking advantage of their two shots on some holes, aided by the course playing quite short with the frozen fairways, scoring heavily.
In second place, with 84 points, were Rob Needham, John Whyman, Margaret Allen and Karen Cookson, beating the team of John Davies, Geoff Mosley, Lyn Cox and Sue Needham on countback. However, clear winners with 90 points were Dave Collins, Hugh Rowdon, Patricia Rawlins and Julia Phillips.
