THE wet December weather wreaked havoc with the scheduled competitions in the Seniors section of Fosseway Golf Club and saw the postponement of the Christmas medal but at least the group have managed to complete the qualifying rounds of the Winter League and Guerwyn Thomas Trophy.
The Winter League saw the entrants take part in four divisions with the top two going through to the quarter-finals. Phil Winsley won all three of his matches in group 1 and goes forward with Martyn Cuer, Malcolm Emery and Alan Jones were successful in group 2, Shaun Goodwin and Cyril Blacker in group 3 and the holder Paul Trigg in group 4 together with Allen Cheney. In the quarter-finals Winsley plays Blacker, Emery faces up against Cheney, Goodwin meets Cuer and Trigg’s opponent is Jones.
Competition secretary Chris Appleton and John Cooper came out on top in the Guerwyn Thomas qualifiers with an impressive nett score of 62. In second place came Goodwin and Gerry Rowell with 65 with Mike Ricketts and Graham Edgell third with a nett 66.
The other five qualifiers were Jones and Bob Townsend (nett 67), Winsley and Emery (nett 68), Rex Wyatt and Chris Champion (nett 69), Andy Flagg and Cuer (nett 70) and Anthony Gregory and Mike Weeks (nett 71).
The quarter-finals sees Appleton and Cooper up against Gregory and Weeks, Goodwin and Rowell versus Flagg and Cuer, Ricketts and Edgell facing Wyatt and Champion and finally Jones and Townsend against Winsley and Emery.
The poor weather has meant golfers have had to stay off the course for long spells and the forecast for some time ahead is not good with even snow being forecast in some areas, along with rain, and a particularly cold snap - not unexpected considering the time of the year.
